Spring flipped the storefronts on Bloomfield Avenue faster than most of us could keep up with. A Thai restaurant is now an Amalfi Coast trattoria. A 20-year clothing boutique on Church Street is becoming a gelateria. A pizzeria on Walnut opened a walk-up window so you don't have to commit to a whole pie on your way home from the train.
Here is the useful frame for the season: Montclair's summer really lives on three anchors. Two blocks of Bloomfield Avenue, one short stretch off it, and a single plaza that turns into a free concert venue every other Tuesday. If you know those anchors, you already have your summer planned.
The Bloomfield Avenue Cluster
The most talked-about opening this spring is Campofiore, a new farm-to-table Italian spot from Stout NYC Hospitality Group at 664 Bloomfield Avenue. It leans into the Amalfi Coast with a strong farm-to-table focus, using ingredients sourced in New Jersey, and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. If the name Stout sounds familiar, it should: Campofiore is part of Stout's growing footprint in Montclair. The group, which operates 17 bars and restaurants in New York City, made its first expansion outside the city last summer through its partnership with The MC Hotel. There, it runs the food and beverage, including The Splendid Rooftop and Allegory. That is three Stout concepts within a short walk of each other now.
A few blocks down, Insomnia Cookies expanded to Montclair on April 11th, 2026, at 332 Bloomfield Avenue. The shop is open Sunday through Wednesday from 11AM – 1AM and Thursday through Saturday from 11AM – 3AM. The late hours matter if you are near Montclair State or catching a show at the Wellmont and want something after.
Two more Italian openings are pushing the corridor further in the same direction. Signage for Morristown native Ju-Ichi Japanese Restaurant was spotted in April at 512 Bloomfield Avenue, with the upcoming concept blending traditional Japanese dishes with innovative, chef-driven techniques. Its focus is on bold, fresh flavors, with each dish prepared using high-quality ingredients. The opening date is still TBA. And Montclair will gain another new restaurant serving Italian cuisine: Clementina. Offering refined dishes inspired by the Adriatic coast, it is rooted in history and tradition and set to open in May.
Off Bloomfield: Walnut And Church
The two most interesting sidewalk moves this spring aren't on the avenue itself.
On Walnut, Brick + Dough, located on 110 Walnut Street in Montclair, officially launched its Slice Window on April 8th, 2026, letting customers grab thin, crispy slices of its daily specials and staples without ordering a whole pie. The window operates during regular business hours, and prompts customers to "ring the bell for assistance," making it easy for commuters and locals alike to stop by for a quick slice. That is a small format change with a big daily-life impact for anyone walking from the Walnut Street train station.
On Church Street, signage was spotted in April 2026 for Oggi Gelato, an Italian gelateria taking over the former Oasis clothing boutique space at 40 Church Street, which closed in December 2025 after 20 years in business. Founded by Carmelo Chiaramida and brought to the United States by Maurizio and Graziano Ricci of the Romanacci restaurant group, the brand serves traditional artisanal gelato made with high-quality ingredients and no preservatives or artificial additives. Montclair will mark its first New Jersey location and first U.S. debut for the brand.
And in the DaVinci's space that anchored one end of Bloomfield for a generation, taking over the longtime DaVinci's pizzeria location, Farmhouse Fried Chicken is the new venture from the team behind Dan & Day's. Set to open by the end of April 2026, the Montclair spot will serve elevated fried chicken, with a menu centered on sandwiches and additional bone-in options. The space will feature a farmhouse-inspired design, giving diners the feeling of enjoying comfort food in a barn-style setting.
Add it up: two new Italian concepts, one gelateria, one Japanese kitchen, one late-night cookie shop, one fried chicken concept, and a slice window. All within a fifteen-minute walk of each other.
Tuesday Nights Belong To Wellmont Arts Plaza
Here is the thing most residents haven't clocked yet. The Montclair Jazz Festival is not one Saturday in September anymore. It is a summer-long series that turns Tuesday evenings into a free concert habit.
The 17th annual festival will span the summer rather than just a weekend. The lineup includes a new five-week Soundcheck Series on Tuesday evenings in June, July and August with performances at Wellmont Arts Plaza and a finale Downtown Jamboree + Block Party on Aug. 15 at Lackawanna Plaza. The programming has a spine this year. The 2026 festival will also honor the 100th birthdays of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Along with that, the Smithsonian Institution selected the Montclair Jazz Festival as one of its collaborating festivals for "Of the People: The Smithsonian Festival of Festivals," connected to the country's 250th anniversary. The Smithsonian's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, which produces its annual Folklife Festival, will collaborate with approximately 40 festivals around the country, and Montclair is one of them.
"Jazz was born in New Orleans and raised in New York City, but along the way it made many stops where it grew, and continues to grow today," said McBride. "The cities that we're spotlighting at this summer's festival are among the most important cities in the history of jazz."
August 15: The One Saturday To Block Off
If you only make it to one festival day, this is it. Saturday, August 15th, 12 – 8pm: 8 hours of live music, curated selection of food and merchandise, fun for the whole family. The Downtown Jamboree will bring together a wide variety of jazz artists, including Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride Big Band with Bilal, Patrice Rushen, Take Me to the River New Orleans All Stars, featuring Cyril Neville, and The Gotham Kings.
Scale context matters here. What started in 2010 as a small student performance for a few hundred people in Nishuane Park has grown into the region's largest free outdoor jazz festival. Last year, more than 30,000 people turned out — the biggest crowd in festival history. When 30,000 people descend on Lackawanna Plaza, parking near downtown disappears by mid-morning. Walk or bike if you are within a mile.
One programming note worth knowing about in advance: the festival will offer a special "pay what you can" Jam Pass, which gives attendees access to an express entry lane and a chance to win access to the VIP tent.
A Local's Playbook For The Rest Of The Season
- Pick your Tuesday early. The Soundcheck Series is free, but Wellmont Arts Plaza fills up. If you want the New Orleans night on August 4 with Rebirth Brass Band, plan on arriving before dusk.
- Use the Slice Window as a plan, not a rescue. Brick + Dough's ring-the-bell window at 110 Walnut works best on a weeknight when you want dinner solved in six minutes.
- Save Campofiore for a reservation night. With only Tuesday-through-Saturday evening service and a downtown crowd, walk-ins in July will be tough. Book ahead.
- Treat Church Street as its own outing. Between Oggi Gelato taking over 40 Church Street and the surrounding storefronts, an after-dinner walk here has a different feel than Bloomfield.
- Block August 15 now. The Downtown Jamboree is the one Saturday where the whole town is downtown at the same time. Trying to run errands that day is a losing game.
The compression is what makes this summer feel different. Three of the biggest food openings in years landed in a single six-week window, and the town's largest cultural event stopped being a one-day thing. If you have lived here five summers or twenty-five, this is the season the map got redrawn.
